Dresden, located on the Elbe river, and capital of the state of Saxony, is one of the furthest east-located cities in Germany. The city has had a shaky past: after being almost completely flattened during the Second World War, a large amount of rebuilding has taken place. The story of Dresden, discovering the contrasts of times and eras through which the city has survived, makes the city of the most interesting in Europe. Must-see sites include the 'Semperoper' (Opera house) and the 'Frauenkirche' (Lutheran Church), which have been majorly restored after the Dresden Bombings. Also, you should definitely enjoy a Dresden-brewed 'Radeburger Pilsner' Beer with dinner or 'Dresdner Christstollen' and 'Glühwein' at the Christmas Markets in winter.
