Altenrhein
Visit Altenrhein, just east of Rorschach, on the delta of the Old Rhine river. There is a bit of history here in Altenrhein, known for its base from which old Dornier flying-boats used to take off in the early 1920s. A specially designed manufacturing plant for these unusual aircraft was located in Altenrhein with the Dornier DO-X made famous by one of its maiden passengers, a woman named Clara Adams. Fly with Austrian Airlines to Altenrhein and visit a "must-see" landmark, the Markthalle. A beautifully majestic and unique architectural masterpiece, the Markthalle was designed by the internationally acclaimed artist, Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Its bright illuminated colors, wondrous curvy lines, unusual grassy roofs and uneven floors, are text-marks of Hundertwasser's known architecture. While visiting there, stop by the restaurant and enjoy some of the best Swiss coffee, cakes, and snacks and bask in the cool and comfortable air of Altenrhein.
